Printing controlled substances prescriptions (British Columbia)

⚠️ Important: This is currently a beta feature, available to a few CHR beta users in order to test and provide feedback. It will be available to more users once the beta period is complete.

When prescribing Controlled Prescription Program (CPP) drugs in BC, you must use special duplicate forms. You can print onto these forms directly from the CHR, which automatically populates prescription details and eliminates manual entry errors. You will retain the printed copy marked "Duplicate" and the patient receives the printed original to give to the pharmacist.

For more information, refer to https://www.bcpharmacists.org/cpp.

Steps

  1. Start a prescription (refer to Creating prescriptions).

  2. In the Total Daily Dose field, enter the total amount of medication the patient will take in one day.

  3. In the Daily Witnessed Ingestion (Frequency/Week) list, select how many days per week the patient must take the medication under supervision.
📌Note: The Refill field is greyed out and the +Add dose option is not available since controlled prescriptions with witnessed ingestion do not allow refills or multiple dosing schedules.

  4. Select the checkbox BC Controlled Prescription to indicate this prescription will be printed on the special CPP Form.

  5. Click Save.

  6. Review and sign the prescription. Click the Print BC CPP Form button that appears.

  7. Load the Controlled Prescription Program Form into your printer.

  8. Click Print. The system automatically populates patient demographics, medication details, and special instructions onto the appropriate form fields.

  9. Sign the printed form and provide the original to the patient to present to the pharmacy. Retain the printed copy marked "Duplicate".
