Using CHR ambient scribe to write AI-generated encounter notes

⚠️ Important: This is currently a beta feature, available to a few CHR beta users in order to test and provide feedback. It will be available to more users once the beta period is complete.

CHR’s ambient scribe is integrated directly into the CHR. You launch it directly from your encounter note to generate clinical notes based on your conversation with the patient or an unstructured dictated summary, which then automatically populates your encounter note. You can review and edit each AI-generated section before saving. It works for both in-clinic and virtual visits.

What CHR’s ambient scribe can help you do:

  • Document encounter details quickly without manual typing

  • Review AI-generated sections directly in your encounter note

  • Append clinical content below existing template information (CHR's ambient scribe never overwrites pre-populated fields)

  • Adapt to your specialty (supports 100+ specialties, from critical care to neurosurgery)

  • Work in any care setting, whether you're in home health, urgent care, or a traditional clinic

  • Transcribe conversations in 80+ languages (patients speak their native language while notes are automatically generated in English)

⚠️ Important: Always review AI output for professional quality and medical accuracy before accepting it into your encounter record.

CHR's ambient scribe operates within TELUS CHR's controlled environment, ensuring no patient-identifiable data leaves approved, secure channels. While leveraging AI capabilities, it maintains our patient privacy and security standards.

Steps

1. Start or access an encounter. Refer to Recording encounter notes.

2. Click the Ambient scribe icon in the top right corner of the encounter. The AI copilot opens on the right side of your screen.

3. The system pre‑selects the checkbox “I confirm the patient or their legal authorized representative gave their consent”. You must obtain the patient’s consent before you continue.

4. Select your preferred microphone from the list (typically labeled Microphone Array (AMD Audio Device) or similar).

📌Note: When prompted, allow browser access to your microphone. If you refuse permission, you'll trigger the "No microphone detected" error.

5. Click Start Session. Ambient scribe begins recording.

📌 Note: If you use video‑call tools outside of the CHR, select Record over telehealth.

6. A live pink waveform appears on your screen, showing that audio is being captured.

  • Click Show transcript to see the live, auto‑generated text.

  • Click Hide transcript to return to the waveform view.

💡Tip: You can pause or end the recording at any time.

📌 Note: If you navigate away from the encounter during an active recording, a banner appears at the top of the screen indicating that a session is in progress and being recorded. You can pause the recording or return to the encounter directly from this banner.

7. Click End Session to stop recording. The scribe displays “Generating note and plan” while it processes the audio and clinical data.

📌 Note: Recordings under one minute in length may not generate notes.

8. Once processing is complete, a time-stamped transcript appears showing who spoke and when.

9. The AI-generated note and plan populates in the relevant sections (History, Examination, Assessment and Plan) of your encounter. Review the auto-populated content for accuracy and make edits as needed before signing the encounter.

📌 Note: If your encounter template includes scribe variables, the ambient scribe will automatically populate those designated sections when you end the recording. Refer to Configuring scribe variables in encounter templates for more information.
