Viewing and saving trending lab graphs and tables
Updated over a week ago

If you are integrated with electronic labs such as Excelleris or OLIS, you can view lab values in a table or graphical format. This is useful for reviewing ongoing medical diagnoses and so that you can see a trend of results over time. You can access a lab graph or table anywhere within the CHR that you can open the lab result.

Lab results are often named slightly differently depending on the electronic lab distributor it is received from (e.g Hemoglobin, Haemoglobin, Hb). You can use lab mapping to sync different lab result names to a standardized common name. The common name shows in the Latest Lab Results and Lab Results section. Lab mapping ensures that lab results of the same type which have slightly different names can trend together on one graph.

📌 Note: Lab results do not map together if they come in under different group heading names. For example, a lab result for Hemoglobin with a group heading of Hematology does not map with a lab result for Hemoglobin with a group heading of Complete Blood Count. The group heading name appears at the top left of the lab report and under the lab result name in Latest Lab Results and Lab Results sections.

Steps

  1. Open the lab report or lab result. You can access them from the following locations:

Location

Description

Patient chart > Lab Results section

Patient chart > Summary view > Lab Results

We recommend graphing labs from either of these locations because all lab results show here.

When graphing, you see a graph of all results with the same group heading name shown on the lab report (e.g. all Hb results which came in under Complete Blood Count but not Hb results which came in under CBC).

⚠️ Important: Use Ctrl {Cmd} + F to to search for all results as they may not be listed together. For example, glycosylated hemoglobin and hba1c are the same thing but are not listed together.

Patient chart > Patient Data > Latest Lab Results folder

Patient chart > Summary view > Patient Data > Latest Lab Results

💡 Tip: By default Latest Lab Results in Summary view is hidden, click the gear icon beside Patient Data to enable it.

All lab results show here.

If the same lab result has different group heading names, the lab result shows multiple times in this section. You can graph each of the results separately to see all results.

⚠️ Important: Use Ctrl {Cmd} + F to to search for all results as they may not be listed together. For example, glycosylated hemoglobin and hba1c are the same thing but are not listed together.

💡 Tip: When viewing the latest lab results from the patient Summary, ensure you have the Patient Data section configured to Show All Lab Result Items. For more information refer to Customizing the patient summary.

Patient chart > Patient Files section

Patient chart > Summary view > Files

Shows individual lab reports. In the Patient Files section of the chart, you can use the Lab, or domain-specific tag to see specific lab report types.

2. On the far-right side of the lab result, click the graph icon.

The graph and table appear in a new window.

💡 Tip: Electronic labs will have a lab icon instead of a paperclip icon (faxed lab reports). For more information, see Viewing electronic labs.

3. Review the trending values over time.

  • The graph enables you to compare the Observed Value (green) with the Minimum Range (blue) and Maximum Range (pink). An Abnormal lab value highlights with a pink star.

💡 Tip: Hover over the plotted value to see its numerical value. This is helpful for graphs showing a large date range.

  • The table underneath the graph shows all previous lab values. The collected date and time appear in rows with the specific lab value. Abnormal values appear in red with an arrow highlighting if the value is Below Low Normal or Above High Normal.

4. To save the graph and table as a new PDF, click the floppy disk icon. A new PDF file is saved in the patient's chart > Patient Files section. You can add comments, share and edit the new file. For more information see Viewing and managing inbox items.

💡 Tip: This is useful if you need to send the results outside of the CHR through outgoing referrals or to the patient via the patient portal.
