Viewing the Digital Health Drug Repository from the CHR

Updated over 2 weeks ago

⚠️ Important: This is currently a beta feature, available to a few CHR beta users in order to test and provide feedback. It will be available to more users once the beta period is complete.

Ontario's Digital Health Drug Repository (DHDR) provides quick access to comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date patient medication information so you can make more informed decisions to improve patient care.

From the CHR, you can launch the DHDR viewer to view:

  • Publicly-funded drugs, including ones paid for by the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program

  • Monitored drugs (narcotics and controlled substances), including opioids

  • Publicly-funded pharmacy services (e.g. flu vaccines administered or COVID-19 tests performed by a pharmacist)

  • COVID-19 vaccination information documented in the provincial COVID-19 vaccination management system (COVaxON).

The DHDR contains data only for patients where an Ontario health number was used when the service was provided. For COVaxON, the patient must also have consented to the collection of their vaccination data.

For details on specific information available in the DHDR, see the PDF available on the Government of Ontario website.

💡 Tip: You can also access this website from within the DHDR viewer. Click the link that appears in the disclaimer at the top of the window.

You can quickly access the DHDR directly from a patient's chart in the CHR, using the built-in provincial integration service viewer.

Steps

1. Launch the DHDR. For more information, refer to Logging into provincial integration services.

2. When the DHDR viewer loads, you see a summary of Drug dispense events. To view pharmacy services, select the Pharmacy tab.

By default, events or services within the Last 120 days are shown. Click the field to select a specific Date Range or choose to view All available.

📌 Note: if the patient has blocked consent, you must first override before you can see the information. See “Overriding patient privacy consent directive for the DHDR” for more information.

3. Use the filters to narrow the list to look for specific drug dispense events or pharmacy services. For example, you can filter the list of drugs by medication, class, or a specific prescriber or pharmacy. For pharmacy services you can filter by the type or description of the pharmacy service, the pharmacy, or the dispensed date.

Begin typing your search criteria in the field you are filtering by. The list is filtered to items that match your criteria. To further narrow the list, add another filter.

💡 Tip: To return to the default filters, select Clear Filters.

4. To sort the list, click the column heading.

  • For Drug dispense events, you can sort by the Medication (generic name), Brand name, Dispensed date, Prescriber name, Pharmacy name and Therapeutic Class.

  • You can sort Pharmacy services by the Pharmacy Service, Service Type,Therapeutic Class, Dispensed date and Pharmacy name.

5. You can consolidate multiple instances of the same drug dispense events and pharmacy services. Multiple drug dispenses are grouped together if all of generic name, drug strength, and drug form match. Multiple pharmacy services are grouped together if they are the same pharmacy service type. For both types of events, the most recent item is displayed.

Clear the Group by medication checkbox if you wish to view all grouped items as separate entries in the list.

Alternatively, to expand one group in the list, click the + icon to see the details of each individual entry for that specific group. Click the - icon to collapse the group when you are finished.

6. To see more information for a particular item, click the arrow icon on the right to open the detailed view.

7. If a warning icon appears for an item in the list, this is an indication that the patient's name, age, gender, or date of birth in the CHR do not match the patient demographics from the DHDR. Open the detailed view to see the discrepancies (highlighted in yellow).

8. You can print both the summary view and the detailed view.

  • To print the summary view, click the print icon on the top right of the table. Your browser's print dialog will open and will print what is currently displayed in the DHDR viewer.

  • To print the detailed view, click the arrow to expand an item in the list to view the detailed view. Click Print Event. Only that event or service will print.

9. When you are finished, close the DHDR viewer window.

💡 Tip: The DHDR viewer will close automatically if you move away from the patient's chart in the CHR, log out of the CHR, or close your CHR browser window.

📌 Note: We do not recommend you log out of the DHDR viewer using the Log Out button within the viewer. If you do so, you must manually enter your username and password for One ID when you next open the viewer from the CHR.
