Lab synonym mapping FAQ
Updated over 10 months ago

I do not see my lab result when I search by acronym/abbreviation. Has the lab name changed?

The new global lab synonym list uses the long form name in many cases. Try typing the long form name of the lab result instead of the short name or abbreviation. e.g. Type Hemoglobin instead of Hb.

Can I use the lab short name instead of the long form name?

There is currently no option to display the short form name in the CHR. This option may be introduced in the future.

Can I add my own personalized common name to the list?

To ensure consistency and accuracy and streamline maintenance, you cannot add your own common lab test name to the list.

Can I use a short name in flowsheets?

Yes. When you add a flowsheet data element, you can choose the Display Name. Note that when searching for a lab result variable to add to the flowsheet, you must still use the long name.

Will my templates still work with the original lab result variable names?

Yes. The lab result variables using the old short names will still pull the corresponding value for that result. If you edit an existing template or add a new one, you must select the new common name. For example, an existing template will show TSH for the lab result variable but a new template will use Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. If there is a corresponding value for that lab result, it will pull into templates for both the original and new variable names.

What do I do if a lab test result doesn't trend with existing lab results for the same lab test?

If a lab distributor uses a new lab result name that the CHR doesn't recognize, or if an existing lab result test name is not on the global lab synonym list, the lab results will not trend together. If this happens, contact the TELUS Health support team through the support chat and we can investigate the issue. If it is a new lab result name, we will log a ticket to add it to the global synonym list and map it to the appropriate lab result name. All lab test result names are reviewed by our clinical experts.

Who do I contact to add a new lab test result name?

If you have a lab result name that does not trend with existing lab results for the same lab test, contact the TELUS Health support team through the support chat and provide the name of the lab test that is not trending. We will investigate to ensure it is a new lab test result name that is not already on the synonym list, and log a ticket to add it to the global synonym list. All lab test result names are reviewed by our clinical experts.

Why do I see the green bubble lab result variable in my patient's encounter instead of the actual result?

If there is no corresponding lab result for that patient, the green bubble remains. If the patient does have a corresponding lab result that you think should be populated from that variable, contact the TELUS Health support team through the support chat and we will investigate the issue.
