Dispense notifications provide additional insight into the patient’s medication adherence. You receive a dispense notification when a pharmacy processes an e-prescription; this does not necessarily mean the patient has picked up the prescription, only that the pharmacy has filled the prescription. The pharmacy sends dispense notifications every time a prescription is filled (first fill and subsequent refills).

You can see the dispense notification in the patient's Medications list, including the pharmacy that dispensed the prescription and what exactly was dispensed. This is useful if, for example, the pharmacy dispensed the generic version of a brand name medication. If the dispense notification is from a pharmacy that is not in your Contacts, you receive a message in your inbox and you can add the pharmacy.

If the prescription is not picked up by the patient, the pharmacy sends a cancellation for the dispense notification.

Steps

1. In the patient's chart, click Start/Open > Medications. The date the medication was last dispensed displays below the medication information.

💡 Tip: If the most recent dispense was cancelled, the Last Dispensed cancelled on date is shown.

2. To view more information about the dispense, click the medication to expand it and then click the Dispenses tab.

The most recent dispense is at the top and is automatically expanded. For previous dispenses, click the dispense date to see the dispense details. If the dispense was cancelled, the cancellation information is shown above the original dispense.

💡 Tip: Dispensed By will display Unknown Pharmacy if the pharmacy does not match one in your Contacts list. For more information, refer to Adding an unrecognized pharmacy from a dispense notification.
