You can bill for incarcerated patients in British Columbia using their Correctional Service ID (CS ID) provided by the prison, instead of the standard Provincial Health Number (PHN).
Steps
Search for the patient in the CHR. If the patient does not exist, add the patient.
From the patient chart, ensure you are in the Dashboard view.
In the patient header, click Update Information. The Update Patient window opens.
Perform one of the following:
To create a new identification, click +New Identification.
To modify an existing identification, click the pencil icon next to it.
The Create Identification or Update Identification window opens.
Under Create Identification Type or Edit Identification Type, select BC or any identification type that uses MSP as the issuer from the list.
Under Identification Value, enter the patient’s CS ID.
⚠️Important: CS IDs are typically shorter than standard MSP IDs. To use the CS ID for billing, prefix it with zeros (0) to reach the standard MSP ID length of 10 digits. (e.g. If the CS ID is "123456", you enter it as "0000123456".)
Click Save to return to the Update Patient window.
Under Identifications, beside the CS ID created, click Make primary.
Click Save and validate.
You can now create a bill from an encounter, from the Visits dashboard or from the patient's chart.
