With the CHR's AI-powered writing tools you can quickly generate, refine and structure your letters and encounter notes directly in their text fields without leaving your workflow. This speeds up documentation and patient communication, while letting you stay in control. You can modify, copy or discard the AI-generated text as needed.
It can help you:
Quickly generate a draft for common letters, such as referrals, consultation reports, or sick notes.
Summarize or expand content, for example, converting point-form encounter notes into full paragraphs or vice versa.
Rephrase text to improve grammar, clarity, or achieve a more professional tone.
📌Note: When using AI writing tools, Variables in your encounter or letter templates remain functional. Some generated content can also include variables, which function the same as those in templates.
The AI-powered writing tool operates using Large Language Model (LLM) technology. When you make an AI-powered request (for example, Generate > Referral letter), the linked encounter's content is sent to the LLM along with a preprogrammed structured prompt. This process generates the content, which then appears within the AI-Powered Writer.

The AI-powered writing tool works within TELUS CHR’s controlled environment, ensuring no patient-identifiable data is shared outside approved, secure channels. While leveraging AI capabilities, it adheres to patient privacy and security standards.
Steps
Start or access an encounter, or letter. Refer to Recording encounter notes, Creating letters from the patient chart or Creating letters from encounters.
To modify your text, click the AI icon in the formatting toolbar. For letters, the formatting toolbar is above the text field, and within encounter notes, it is below the text field.
💡 Tips:
By default, all text within the text field is selected. To modify only a specific portion, highlight the desired text before clicking the AI icon.
The AI writing icon is greyed out if there is no text in the text field to analyze. However, the Generate option remains active for letters created from encounters, as it analyzes text from the encounter note.
From the list, choose how you would like to manipulate the text.
The available options include:
Action | Description |
Make shorter
| Simplifies and condenses text, making it ideal for summarizing complex information.
💡Tip: You can use this to clean up data variables, such as those pulling in medical data like surgical history. |
Make longer | Expands on your text, for example, converts point-form notes into complete paragraphs. It restructures the content and elaborates on the original text utilizing its extensive knowledge database. |
Make point form | Reformats your text into a shorter, focused list of key takeaways. |
Fix spelling & grammar | Corrects spelling and grammar mistakes. It also resolves formatting issues like inconsistent text sizes from copied external sources. |
Change tone | Adjusts your text to suit a specific audience. It adds or removes qualifying words but does not change the content or context.
There are two options: Make more professional or Make more empathetic. |
Translate | Translates your text into English or French. |
Letter Generation
📌Note: Only available for letters created from Encounters
| Generates text for common letters using the information from the encounter note.
Includes: encounter notes, sick note, referral letter or consultation report.
You can toggle the Include header/footer option to choose whether to include the header and footer.  📌Notes:

4. A purple AI writing window opens below your text, displaying the revised version of your content ready for you to carefully review.
📌Note: This may take a few seconds to process.
5. Use the toolbar at the bottom of the AI writing window to select what you want to do with the new content.
Action | Description |
Discard AI text 
| Close the AI writing window without accepting or saving the generated text.
💡Tip: You can also click the X in the top-right corner. |
Copy 
| Copy the AI-generated text to your clipboard so you can paste it wherever needed. |
Regenerate 
| Regenerate the AI the content provided. |
Insert below 
| Insert the AI-generated text below your selected text. |
Replace 
| Replace your selected text with the AI generated text.
💡 Tip: If you accidentally replace text that you want to keep, you can use the undo function (Ctrl {Cmd}+Z). |
6. The new text is added to your encounter or letter based on your selected option. You can manually edit the text as needed. Remember to save the letter or encounter as usual to retain your changes.
