Billing an on-call stipend (New Brunswick)

In New Brunswick you receive a one-time stipend per night for providing mandated on-call coverage, regardless of how many calls you respond to. This stipend must be billed using a dedicated placeholder patient record with a specific Medicare number (111111118).

Steps

  1. Create a fake patient with the following demographic information:

  • First name: ON

  • Last name: CALL

  • Identification Type: NB

  • Identification Value: 111111118

  • State/Province: NB
📌 Note: The province must be present in the address field for the patient record to be valid for on-call service billing.

📌Note: This placeholder patient record is also used for travel stipends.

    2. When billing the stipend, create a provincial bill from the patient's chart.

    3. In the New NB Billing Item window, complete the following fields:

    a. Code/Description: Search for and select the appropriate stipend code:

    8989 - General Practice rotations

    8990 - Specialists rotations

    8991 - Nursing Home rotations

    8992 - Provincial Jail rotations

    8987 - In-Hospital Overnight stipend

    b. Diagnosis code: Enter any code.

    c. Service Location: Select the location where you rendered the service from the list.

    d. Service Date: Enter the start date of the on-call period.

    e. Show Advanced Fields > Rotation: Select your code from the list (General Practice, Specialist, Nursing Home, Provincial Jail, or In-Hospital Overnight).

📌Note: If you treated a patient while on call, enter that as a separate bill using the patient's Medicare number and an appropriate diagnosis code.
