The Ministry of Health has introduced a temporary list of OHIP fee codes (K087, K088, K089) that cover the provision of medically necessary physician services provided to uninsured patients (i.e. patients with expired OHIP cards) in the community. See Temporary OHIP fee codes for COVID-19 for more details.

⚠️ Important: Ensure that you have created one patient within the MDBilling portal with a patient identifier of 9777777779, before you submit bills to MDBilling with the identifier 9777777779. See Billing services to OHIP that aren't linked to a patient.

To submit the above K-codes to MDBilling, follow the below steps:

  1. Create a bill from the insured billing item section in the Patient Chart. See Creating an insured billing item from a patient chart.

  2. Before you save the claim, click on the patient name, under the PATIENT / IDENTIFICATION heading.

  3. In the window that appears, in the IDENTIFICATION field, change the patient's health card number to 9777777779.

  4. Click outside the patient information pop up window.

  5. In the STATUS field change from Draft to Ready to Submit (if not already in Status: Ready to Submit).

  6. Click Save.

⚠️ Important: If the services provided to an uninsured patient do not match the description of the codes, K087, K088, K089, and the provider submits a claim, it will be rejected. The Provider can:

  • Resubmit the claim once the patient renews their OHIP,

  • If the patient was pronounced as deceased after your service date, the provider can submit the claim flagged for manual review along with the documentation for the services provided.
