Recording prenatal information
Updated over 3 months ago

You can use the Obstetrical Care section of the Health Profile to manage the information for a patient's current and past pregnancies and easily review all pregnancy details in one place.

You can record preconception data, such as the contraception method, as well as pregnancy details, like your patient’s last menstrual period. Estimated date of birth and gestational age are calculated automatically. You can also select your preferred dating method or manually add the estimated date of birth.

Once the pregnancy is completed, you record the pregnancy result in the same record. For more information, refer to Recording a pregnancy result.

⚠️ Important:

  • This information is for record-keeping purposes only; it does not currently pull into other areas of the CHR (for example, Encounters or Forms).

  • This prenatal solution does not apply to Alberta.

Steps

1. In the Summary view of the the patient's chart, expand the Obstetrical Care section. Or in the Quick Menu or the Start/Open menu, choose Health Profile and then expand the Obstetrical Care section. Pregnancies are organized into Current pregnancy and Past pregnancies.

💡 Tip: To customize which columns you see, click the gear icon.

2. To add a new pregnancy, click the plus icon. A new obstetrical care record window opens.

💡 Tip: You can only have one record in Current Pregnancy. If you try to create a second pregnancy, a warning with a link to the current pregnancy appears.

4. The pregnancy status defaults to Current, meaning the pregnancy is active. Select Past to record a past pregnancy; it is then saved in the Past pregnancies section.

5. Complete the details of the pregnancy by filling out the appropriate fields, for example, contraception and pregnancy test details.

6. The Pregnancy dating section includes a calculator that estimates the patient’s key pregnancy milestones, for example EDB By LMP. The calculated fields are greyed out and cannot be manually edited. Fill in the known fields, such as the last menstrual period. The calculations are updated based on the fields that you fill in. Refer to the below chart for calculation details.

The Final EDB is calculated by the selected Dating Method.

7. Add any notes to the Notes field, such as details for an at-risk pregnancy.

8. Click Save. The Current pregnancy details appear in the Obstetrical Care section.

💡 Tips:

  • To edit a pregnancy, click it.

  • To delete a record, click the trash can icon and in the Delete permanently window, from the list, select a Reason for deletion and click Delete. The record is removed.
