Modifying a third-party insurance bill's billing practitioner, location and other bill details (with eClaims enabled)

If your CHR is integrated with TELUS Health eClaims, but the insurance company that you want to bill is not part of the service, create a third-party bill from the patient’s chart.

When you create the third-party insurance bill in the CHR, you can access the insurance company's portal and have both windows open simultaneously. That way you can quickly update the bill in the CHR based on the insurer's response on the portal, saving time and simplifying the bill reconciliation process.

When you create a third party bill, at the top of the bill, you can modify the defaulted Billing Practitioner, Location (if your clinic has multiple locations) and other bill information. The information you can modify depends on where you're billing from - from an encounter, from the Visits dashboard, or from the Insured Billing area of the patient's chart.

Bill information when billing from an encounter:

Bill information when billing from the Visits dashboard, or from the patient's chart:

The following table outlines the bill information you can modify.

Field

Description

Location

If you have more than one clinic location, and the location is set to Default:

  • If the bill is linked to an appointment, the appointment's location is selected for the bill.

  • If the bill is not linked to an appointment, the billing practitioner's primary location is selected for the bill.

To change the location, click the field, and select one from the list.

Payment Issuer (if you're billing from the Visits dashboard or from the patient's chart)

Template (if you're billing from an encounter)

Select the insurance company you want to bill.

You can associate billing codes with your selected insurance company. Refer to Creating or editing third-party billing code templates (with eClaims enabled).

Patient/Identification

(This field is available only if you're billing from the Visits dashboard or from the patient's chart.)

The patient's information is auto-populated based on the chart or appointment you created the bill from.

The patient identification corresponding to the selected insurance company (Payment Issuer/Template) is displayed here. If the patient does not have an identification for the selected insurance company, the patient's primary identifier is displayed.

💡 Tip: To update the patient's demographic information on the bill, for example, to switch the primary insurer, click the patient's name. This does not update the information in the patient's chart. To change the patient's demographic information on the chart (which will then apply to the bill), click the person icon.

Billing Practitioner

If you are a provider, your name is displayed.

If you are not a provider, you must select a billing practitioner. Click No Provider Selected, and then click No Provider Selected again in the window that appears. Search for the appropriate provider.

Facility/Contact (if you're billing from the Visits dashboard or from the patient's chart)

Leave blank.

Service Date (if you're billing from the Visits dashboard or from the patient's chart)

If you created the bill from the patient chart:

  • If you are logged in as a billing provider and the patient had a recent appointment booked in your schedule, the date defaults to the appointment date.

  • If you are not a billing provider or the patient does not have an appointment booked in your schedule, the service date defaults to today's date.

If you created the bill from the Visits dashboard:

  • The service date defaults to the date of the appointment.

💡 Tip: Click the date to select a different one from the calendar or to select a date from a list of the patient's latest appointments.
