⚠️ Important: This is currently a beta feature, available to a few CHR beta users in order to test and provide feedback. It will be available to more users once the beta period is complete.
In the CHR, you can use growth charts to track a child’s growth over time and compare their measurements with children of the same age and sex. Growth chart data is displayed as both an interactive graph and a table, and includes height, weight, head circumference (0-2 years), and body mass index (BMI) (2-19 years). You can view measurements as percentiles or z-scores and use different growth chart standards, including WHO, CDC, or CDC Down Syndrome.
You can manually add measurements in the growth chart. Refer to Adding measurements to growth charts.
Measurements are automatically synchronized between the growth chart and other areas of the patient chart:
When you save or sign an encounter, measurements entered in the encounter’s vitals table are automatically added to the growth chart.
When you update the patient's height, weight, or head circumference in a Qnaire or in Patient Data, the measurements are automatically updated in the growth chart.
When you add a measurement in the growth chart with a more recent date than the latest Patient Data > Vitals entry, it is automatically added to Patient Data.
Steps
1. Open a patient’s growth chart from one of the following locations:
From the patient chart header click More actions > Open growth chart
From the Dashboard view, in the Growth Chart widget, click Open Growth Chart
📌 Note: If this widget is not in the dashboard, add it. Refer to Customizing the patient dashboard.
From an encounter in the Examination section, click Growth Chart
2. Review the growth chart. The patient’s data is displayed in two parts:
Graph: Plots the patient's measurements against the selected growth chart standard.
Table: Lists each measurement with its age, date, and percentile or z-score. The most recent measurements appear at the top.
📌 Notes:
For patients aged 2 years and older, BMI is automatically calculated and displayed in the table when weight and height are recorded on the same date. If either measurement is missing, BMI is not displayed.
The graph and table use the units of measurement set in your user preferences. Refer to Modifying your user preferences.
3. To view details for a specific data point, hover over the data point on the graph. The age, measurement and corresponding percentile or z-score are displayed.
📌Note: If a measurement falls outside the range displayed on the graph, it appears on the maximum or minimum measurement line.
4. To adjust the graph view, use the controls in the top-right corner of the graph:
Zoom in to see more detail,
Zoom out to see the full graph,
Reset zoom to return to the default view,
Full screen to expand the graph to your entire screen.
💡 Tip: To exit full screen mode, click the Full screen icon again.
5. By default, all age ranges are displayed. To view a specific age range, under Age Range, select 0-24 months, or 2-19 years.
6. By default, growth data is displayed as percentiles. To view the growth data as z-scores, under Chart Display, select Z-score.
7. By default, the WHO growth chart standard is used. To use a different standard, on the right, under Data Source, select CDC or CDC DS.
8. By default, Weight for Age is graphed. To view a different measurement, under Measurement, select the measurement you want to graph, for example Height for Age or Head Circumference for Age.
📌 Note: The measurements available depend on the selected Data Source.
9. To compare growth data across standards, or to view different measurements side by side, click Add another chart.
A new chart appears below the existing chart, using the next Data Source in this order: WHO, CDC, CDC DS. The new chart uses the same measurement as the existing chart. You can change the Data Source and Measurement for each chart, for example to compare Length/Height for Age and Weight for Age.
A column is also added to the table for each chart, showing the percentile or z-score data for that chart.
10. To remove an additional chart, click the X (Remove comparison) to the right of the chart label.
11. To save a PDF of the growth chart to the Patient Files section, click Save to Patient File and select the age range. The PDF uses the growth chart standard currently selected under Data Source. A confirmation message appears when the growth chart is saved successfully.
📌 Note: Saving a PDF copy of the growth chart is useful when you want to attach growth charts to outgoing referrals.
12. To print the growth chart, click Print and select the age range. The printout uses the growth chart standard currently selected under Data Source.
13. When you are finished, click X to close the growth chart.
