Viewing and interacting with patient messages within a patient chart

Updated over a week ago

From a patient chart, you can see a list of messages sent directly to the patient as well as messages exchanged internally about the patient from the chart.

For more information about sending messages, see Sending messages to patients through the patient portal.

Steps

1. Search for and access the desired patient's chart (see Searching for patients).

2. In the top-right corner of the patient chart, click the menu > Messages. Or, from the Summary view, click to unfold the Messages section. If you do not see this section, refer to Customizing the patient summary.

Dashboard view:

Summary view:

A list of messages sent from the patient chart appears.

💡 Tips:

  • When you view messages within a patient’s chart from the Summary view or the Messages section of the patient chart, the message columns are the same.

  • The Recipient column shows if the message was exchanged internally or sent to the patient.

  • The Status column shows if the conversation is Closed or Open.

  • If a message is marked as urgent by the sender, a red Urgent banner appears at the beginning of the message title in both the Summary view and the Messages section of the patient chart.

📌 Note: You can click a message to view its details and take further actions. For example, in a message sent to the patient, you can see if the message was read by the patient or members of the conversation, invite others to the conversation, or close the conversation permanently.
