If you're a specialist or a provider who receives referrals, you can add the referring provider when you bill the province for services. If a Referring Practitioner is recorded in the patient's chart, the referring practitioner is automatically added to each billing item (service code) when you select the Referring Practitioner checkbox.
💡 Tip: To have the Referring Practitioner checkbox selected by default, in Start/Open > Insured Billing, click the gear icon beside the New Payment button and select By default show advanced fields with referral practitioner (BC MSP, AB Hlink). For more information, refer to Customizing your insured payment settings.
If the patient doesn't have a referring practitioner recorded, or if you want to change the referring practitioner on the bill, in the billing item(s), you can add or modify the referring practitioner.
Steps
1. Start a bill from an encounter, from the Visits dashboard or from the patient's chart. If you're editing a bill, open the bill from the Billing dashboard.
2. Add a billing item (service code) to the bill or click to edit a billing item. See Adding billing items (service codes) to provincial bills.
3. In the Edit Alberta HLink Billing Item window, select the Referring Practitioner checkbox.
4. If the patient has a Referring Practitioner recorded in their chart, that provider's name is populated automatically. Otherwise, click the Search icon, and search for the referring practitioner by name, billing code, facility or occupation.
If the referring practitioner you want doesn't display in the search results, add them as a contact and then search for and select the added contact. Click the add contact icon and enter the required information.
📌 Note: If the referring provider is out of province, enter anything as the billing number.
The selected Referring practitioner is automatically added to the next billing items added.
