The patient portal comes included as part of your CHR Collaborative Health Record software. When your clinic is first implemented with the TELUS CHR, if you want your patients to access to the patient portal right away, the TELUS Health team can help configure and customize the patient portal for you. But you can set up the patient portal yourself at any time. You can also modify your patient portal settings.

📌 Note: To enable the patient portal or customize your patient portal settings, you must log in under your clinic's Administrator account (account owner).

⚠️ Important: When you enable the patient portal, existing patients are not automatically allowed access. You must turn on portal access for each patient individually. See Allowing patients to access the patient portal.


  1. From the main toolbar, click Settings > Patient Portal.

  2. Under Patient Portal Configuration, Enable or Disable the following:



Portal Accessibility

Gives patients access to the portal.

Portal Accessibility for New Patients

Gives all new patient access by default.

Patient Registration

Allows anyone to self-register as a patient at your clinic through the patient portal.

Patient Conversation Responses

Allows patients to respond to messages from your clinic by default.

💡 Tip: If enabled, you can still choose to prevent patients from responding to messages on a per message basis. See Sending messages to patients through the patient portal.

Portal Billing

Allows patients to see and pay their private bills from the patient portal.

📌 Note: Your CHR must be set up for Stipe integration to use this feature. See

Configuring Stripe in the CHR.

Extra Searchable Identifications

Allows patients to search for their "other" (non-provincial health number) ID when confirming their identity during login.

You enable this this setting if your clinic uses ID types, other than provincial health numbers, when adding patients to the CHR. See Adding a patient.

Background Image

To display a watermark image over your patient portal's blue background, click Select a background image and upload an image from your computer.

Patient Timeout Duration

When patients login to the patient portal, they verify their identity by entering a one time passcode - which they receive through an email or text message.

To modify the amount of time it takes for the one time passcode (OTP) to expire,

click arrow and select a timeout duration.

Appointment Statuses to hide

To prevent patients from seeing past or future appointments that have certain appointment statuses, select the appointment statuses to hide. See Hiding appointment statuses in the patient portal.

Login Credentials from notifications

Patients can either login from an email or SMS with

  • OTP and Date of Birth, or

  • Patient ID (e.g. provincial health number) and Date of Birth.

2. Click Save Portal Settings.
